Personal, Social, Service (PSS) and Career and College Preparedness (CCP)
Importance of Personal, Social, Service (PSS) Standards
PSS standards are foundational to Highland’s educational philosophy, focusing on the development of the whole child. These standards go beyond academics, helping students build essential life skills such as communication, critical thinking, collaboration, and creativity. All of which are crucial for success in any post-high school path.
By organizing PSS into five key areas: Health, Personal, Social, Personal Expression, and Service, students are encouraged to explore and grow in multiple dimensions of their lives. They gain the opportunity to apply what they learn not only in traditional classroom settings (like Advisory and core classes) but also in real-world contexts such as sports, music, volunteering, and jobs. This integration of school and life experiences helps students understand the relevance of their learning and empowers them to take ownership of their growth.
Completing the PSS requirements culminates in a student-led presentation of learning, allowing them to reflect on and showcase their personal development to a chosen panel. This is a valuable exercise in self-awareness, public speaking, and goal-setting. Ultimately, PSS standards ensure that students don’t just leave school with academic knowledge, but also with the emotional intelligence, interpersonal skills, and sense of responsibility needed to thrive in any future path.
Importance of College and Career Preparedness (CCP) Standards
The CCP standards are designed to equip students with practical, real-world skills essential for success in college, careers, and life. These standards focus on areas often underrepresented in traditional curricula, such as financial literacy, digital citizenship, professional etiquette, and career exploration. Mastering these competencies prepares students to navigate adult responsibilities with confidence and competence.
Just like with PSS, students have flexibility in how they meet CCP standards, whether that is through academic classes, Advisory, electives, workshops, or outside experiences. This flexibility supports personalized learning and acknowledges that valuable growth happens both inside and outside the classroom.
By completing all three levels of CCP, students leave Highland with a strong foundation in the skills needed to manage finances, communicate effectively in professional settings, work well in teams, and use technology responsibly. These are not just career skills. They are life skills that support long-term success, no matter the path a student chooses after graduation.
Why Both Matter
Together, PSS and CCP standards create a comprehensive approach to education that values academic knowledge and personal development. By prioritizing both, Highland ensures that students are not only college and career ready but also prepared to be thoughtful, well-rounded individuals capable of contributing meaningfully to their communities.
These standards help students understand themselves, connect with others, and plan for the future. Making them essential pillars of Highland’s mission to develop capable, confident graduates.
