Technology Use Expectations

Computers are a privilege that should only be used when directed by a teacher. Responsible and appropriate computer use is critical to the learning environment. Computers (school-issued and personal) should be used for educational purposes only. Computer use is monitored by ASD, and use of the network and school computers is not intended or provided for personal use. All students have an @asdk12.net Google account. This account should be used for school-related purposes only. The Anchorage School District monitors student accounts, flagging inappropriate content and use. Misuse of a school device may result in a restrictive technology plan or temporary suspension of a student’s account. For Google account login support, please see an administrator.

Chromebooks and Personal Laptops

Each student is assigned a Chromebook unless they choose to use their own laptop. Phones may not be used for classwork. School-issued Chromebooks will be issued to students until they graduate or leave the Anchorage School District. Please handle devices with care—fines will be issued when damage is done intentionally. Students should report problems with their Chromebook to the admin immediately. If a Chromebook becomes defective, at no fault of the student, ASD will replace the Chromebook without charge.

Whether using a school Chromebook or a personal laptop, students are required to bring a charged device to class every day. Arriving unprepared may impact classroom participation if no device or charger is available. The school does not loan out chargers during the school day. Replacement chargers cost $20 and can be purchased in the main office.

Computer Fees

Lost, stolen, or intentionally damaged devices and accessories are the responsibility of the student and parents/guardians involved in the loss of property. Fines may be charged for any repair or replacement of the Chromebook for any reason listed below. An updated fee schedule can be found on Highland’s website

Cell Phone and Earbud/Headphone Policy

A student may possess a cell phone in school, on school property, at after-school activities, and at school-related functions as long as such activity does not interfere with educational processes, behavior expectations, or safety/security. Cell phones are to remain off and put away at all other times during the school day, except during lunch. As a condition of this permission, the student assumes ALL RISK of loss, damage, or theft of their cellular phone or any other electronic device.

Students are expected to have their earbuds/headphones put away and cell phones turned off and out of sight during class and passing time. They are permitted to use their device before school, during lunch, and after school. Parents and guardians wishing to contact their student should do so by contacting the main office at 907-742-1700.

If a student has their cell phone or earbuds/headphones out in class or out during passing time, regardless of the reason, teachers will confiscate the device to be stored in an administrator’s office for the rest of the school day. The school assumes no liability for confiscated items.

  1. Students will need to pick up their device from the administration at the end of the school day. Parents will be notified by the Administration if a pattern of device use emerges.
  2. If this is a repeated behavior, the Administration will work with the family to determine appropriate consequences and establish a device restriction plan (ex: devices left at home, devices checked in before going to class, etc.).
  3. Students will work with the Administration to develop an action plan prior to lifting the restriction plan.

Academic Honesty

Highland Academy strongly disapproves of cheating in any form and will take appropriate disciplinary action when academic dishonesty occurs. Faculty and staff take academic integrity seriously. As a result, any assignment involving cheating will receive a grade of “No Basis”, and additional consequences such as alternative assignments or demonstrating mastery of Highland’s plagiarism standards may be applied. Academic dishonesty will result in progressive discipline. A determination of the seriousness and the appropriate disciplinary course of action will be made by the teacher and/or admin. It is each student’s responsibility to understand and follow the expectations for every assignment. This includes carefully reviewing instructions and communicating with the teacher if there is any uncertainty.

Unintentional or Low-Level Academic Misconduct

Low-level offenses include, but are not limited to:

  • Using unauthorized materials, notes, devices, or aids during an academic task
Example: Using a calculator when the instructions say “No calculators.”

High-level offenses include, but are not limited to:

  • Intentionally submitting or claiming another person’s work as your own
  • Using unauthorized AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Grammarly, Google Search summaries)
  • Using unapproved notes, study aids, or technology during a restricted assignment or test
  • Communicating or cheating during assessments or standardized tests
